Storing a Vehicle on Ethanol-Blended Petrol
The damage that happens while the vehicle is doing nothing at all.
The most damaging thing ethanol does to a vehicle happens while the vehicle is doing nothing at all. A bike ridden daily cycles its fuel too fast for the problem to develop. A second car used once a month, or a machine laid up for a season, is where the real damage occurs.
This guide covers what happens in a standing tank, and what to do about it.
Phase separation, explained properly
Ethanol is hygroscopic: it absorbs water from the air. Petrol does not. In a blended fuel, the ethanol acts as a carrier that holds a small amount of water in solution throughout the fuel.
That works until it doesn't. Past a certain water content — reached faster in humid conditions, in a partly empty tank, and at lower temperatures — the mixture can no longer hold the water. The ethanol and water drop out of the petrol together and settle as a separate layer at the bottom of the tank. This is phase separation, and it is not reversible by shaking the tank or topping it up.
The consequences are worse than "the fuel is old":
- The bottom layer has essentially no fuel value. It is a water-alcohol mixture. Every fuel system draws from the bottom of the tank, so this is what reaches the engine first.
- It causes immediate lean misfire if it enters a carburettor jet or an injector — the engine is being fed something that barely burns.
- It is actively corrosive to steel and zinc components it sits against, which on a steel tank means the tank floor.
- The remaining upper layer has lost its ethanol, and with it the octane contribution the blend was providing.
How long is too long?
There is no single number, because it depends on humidity, temperature swings, how full the tank is, and how well it seals. Useful rules of thumb rather than guarantees:

| Longer than a few months | Either fill and treat properly, or drain the system completely and dry. Do not leave it half full. |
The full tank rule, and why it works
The single most repeated piece of advice about storing a vehicle on ethanol fuel is to keep the tank full. The mechanism is worth understanding, because it explains the exceptions.
Water enters a tank mainly through the vent, carried in humid air. As the tank warms during the day it breathes out; as it cools at night it draws moist air in, and moisture condenses on the cool metal above the fuel line. The larger the air space, the more air is exchanged per cycle and the more internal surface there is for condensation.
A nearly full tank has almost no air space, so it breathes very little and offers almost no bare metal above the fuel. A genuinely empty, dry tank has nothing to condense into either. A half-full tank is the worst of both.
Full tank or empty tank — pick one deliberately. Full is easier and better for most vehicles, since it also keeps seals wet. Completely empty and dry is the choice for very long layups, or where you would rather not have several months of degrading fuel to dispose of. Halfway is the failure mode.
A storage checklist
- Run the engine to full operating temperature before laying up. This drives condensation out of the crankcase and exhaust.
- Fill the tank to near capacity, ideally with ethanol-free fuel if you can reach an XP100, poWer100 or Speed 100 outlet.
- Add a stabiliser with corrosion inhibitors if the fuel is ethanol-blended and the layup is longer than a few weeks.
- Run the engine for several minutes afterwards so treated fuel reaches the lines, pump, carburettor or fuel rail. Stabiliser sitting in the tank protects the tank only.
- Drain carburettor float bowls on any carburetted vehicle stored more than a few weeks. Fuel left in a bowl evaporates and leaves gum in the jets.
- Park under cover, out of large daily temperature swings where you can.
- Where practical, start and run the vehicle periodically — but properly, to full temperature and ideally with a short drive. A two-minute idle in the driveway is worse than leaving it alone: it introduces fresh condensation without ever getting hot enough to drive it back out.
Coming out of storage
- Before the first start, look for a distinct layer at the bottom of the tank if you can see into it, or drain a small sample from the lowest point.
- If you find separated fuel, drain it rather than trying to run it. Dispose of it responsibly — do not tip it down a drain.
- Change the fuel filter after a long layup rather than before it.
- Expect the first tank after storage to run rough while the system clears, and do not immediately conclude the engine is damaged.
Why E0 matters most for stored vehicles
Every other use case for ethanol-free fuel is about performance or gradual wear. This one is about a specific failure mode that ethanol-free petrol simply does not have: no ethanol means no hygroscopic carrier, which means no phase separation. Plain petrol still oxidises and goes stale over months, but it does not produce a corrosive water layer sitting on your tank floor.
If you can only get ethanol-free fuel occasionally, the tank you put in before a long layup is the one where it does the most good.
