Ethanol-Resistant Fuel System Parts
What to specify, what to replace first, and why the cheapest part matters most.
Most ethanol-related failures on older vehicles are material failures, not engine failures. Rubber that was correct for petrol is wrong for a 20% ethanol blend. The parts are inexpensive, widely available, and replacing them pre-emptively is the highest-value protective work available to most owners.

Elastomers: the core of the problem
Nearly every seal, hose, O-ring and gasket in a fuel system is a rubber compound chosen for resistance to the fuel it will meet. The compound that has been standard for decades is excellent against petrol and poor against alcohol.

Viton is a brand, FKM is the material. Viton is DuPont's trade name for a family of fluoroelastomers; the generic term is FKM. A seal sold as FKM is the same class of material. Do not pay a premium purely for the trade name, and do not assume something unlabelled is FKM because it is black and looks similar.
Fuel hose: what to ask for
Fuel hose is graded, and the grade is what matters rather than the appearance. The relevant standard family is SAE J30, where the higher R-numbers indicate greater resistance to alcohol-blended fuels and lower permeation. SAE J30 R9 is the commonly cited specification for ethanol-blended fuel service.
- Ask for hose rated for ethanol-blended fuel, and check the marking printed on the hose itself rather than relying on what the counter says.
- Unmarked generic hose is a gamble. It is the cheapest part in the system and the one that leaks petrol onto a hot engine when it fails.
- PTFE-lined braided hose is the durable option where cost and appearance allow, common on performance and restoration builds.
- Replace the clamps at the same time. Old worm-drive clamps on hardened hose are a standard leak point.
Metals
Ethanol combined with absorbed water attacks some metals that plain petrol leaves alone.
- Steel — corrodes where a separated water layer sits. Stainless (304 or 316) is the durable choice for hard lines on a rebuild.
- Zinc alloy and pot metal — used in some period carburettor bodies and fittings; corrodes and cannot be practically repaired. Keeping water out of the system is the only real protection.
- Brass — generally holds up well and is the usual choice for jets and fittings.
- Aluminium — broadly acceptable in modern automotive alloys, but older castings paired with standing water are a risk.
Carburettor rebuild kits
Kits described as "ethanol safe" or "for modern fuels" are increasingly common for popular classic carburettors. What a good kit changes:
- Gaskets and O-rings in FKM or fluorosilicone instead of nitrile or cork
- A needle valve and seat assembly rated for alcohol blends
- A float that will not absorb fuel — metal or a modern closed-cell type instead of early plastics
- Brass or stainless fasteners where the originals were plated steel
Buy from established suppliers and check the material specification rather than the marketing description. "Ethanol safe" is not a regulated claim.
Realistic priority order
You do not need to rebuild an entire fuel system to be meaningfully protected. In descending order of value for money:
- Flexible fuel hose and clamps. Cheapest, easiest, and the failure with the worst consequences. Do this first on anything older than about a decade.
- Fuel filter. Not a compatibility issue, but E20 mobilises old deposits and filters clog sooner. Shorten the interval.
- Carburettor seals, needle valve and float on carburetted vehicles — typically bundled in a rebuild kit.
- Fuel pump diaphragm and seals where the pump is mechanical and old.
- Tank treatment or sealing only where corrosion is already evident. This is specialist work and not a preventive step for most owners.
- Hard lines in stainless — worth doing during a restoration, not worth doing on its own.
